Meet the Glow interns

Over the last few months, Glow’s interns have been hard at work supporting projects and building on their skills and commercial experience. It has been a challenging but rewarding period as this team of resilient and motivated individuals have dived straight into a variety of tasks and managed to power through their program. Thus, the time has come to shine a light on the budding graduates who have helped support Glow to achieve multiple milestones and celebrate their learning experience.

Introducing… our 2017 Melbourne interns!

Meet: Vicente

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Vicente and I am currently in my final semester of a Master of Management (Accounting and Finance) degree at The University of Melbourne. I came across Glow while looking for professional development opportunities to complement my studies. I had no clue this was the start of an exciting chapter of my career at a collaborative and fun environment (with free coffee!). I have grown both personally and professionally, and I hope to use the experience gained at Glow with my academic background to work in the management consulting industry in the future.

What is it like to work at Glow?

When I think of working at Glow, one of the first things that comes to mind is teamwork. The culture is strongly collaborative, the team is very supportive, and the job is dynamic. I had the chance to be involved in a very exciting time given that we were just entering the market and had the chance to be involved in almost all aspects of the product and with different departments in the business. Working in different areas for the business has been an invaluable real-world experience. Lastly, managing my own project and having an impact was very rewarding.

What piece of advice do you have for the next group of interns?

Glow cares about employee growth, so make sure you know what you want to get out of the internship and speak up. Don’t be afraid to ask to be involved in an area you like or want to get into in the future. I would say to the future interns that you should remain open to learn, be proactive, ask lots of questions along the way, and have fun!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

As a finishing Marketing graduate from RMIT University, I came to Glow at the beginning of my last semester to undertake a Business/Marketing Intern position as a means to acquire relevant experience within the industry, and prepare myself for the real world before completing my degree in Bachelor of Business (Marketing). Over a 12-week period I have gained extensive exposure in market research, marketing communications and human resource projects. My career aspirations for the future is to excel within the marketing industry, and with the improvement of my skills through Glow, the Internship Program provided an essential front-foot towards developing my skills further in the industry.

What is it like to work at Glow?

My time here has been captivating as Glow advocates collaboration, support and enjoyment within the workplace. Working within an engaging startup environment, I was given the flexibility to apply my knowledge and skills in various departments. The only downside in a startup environment is that operational goals change from time to time as the company is still growing within the market, however this allows adaptability to other responsibilities. Continuous guidance from the team has become a valuable contribution to my personal and professional development over the last 12 weeks. The overall journey at Glow has been an unforgettable experience where my skills have been tested in an established yet enjoyable workplace environment.

What piece of advice do you have for the next group of interns?

The best way to make use of this program is to speak up, be willing to learn, be open to take on anything that aligns with your career aspirations, and most importantly enjoy yourself throughout this experience!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Currently, I am in my final semester of my double degree – Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management/Marketing) and Bachelor of Health Science at Monash University. I applied for an internship at Glow as I was looking for an opportunity to actualise my knowledge from university and explore a different industry. As a Human Resources Intern, I have been able to acquaint myself with different aspects of HR including employee engagement and satisfaction. In terms of my future goals, I foresee myself continuing a career in HR and build on what I have learnt from this captivating experience.

What is it like to work at Glow?

Working at Glow is heavily teamwork oriented, the office setting allows everyone to thrive and grow in a supportive environment. Starting the day with team coffee runs and then followed by meetings with different departments to coordinate the next steps for various projects. It sounds hectic, but with a supportive team and manager, I can always ask for clarification and questions. However, sometimes unexpected changes can happen and subsequently the business operation needs to accommodate last minute changes. It can be overwhelming at times, but with an encouraging team, I am inspired to be at my best.

What piece of advice do you have for the next group of interns?

Definitely maintain an open mind and proactive approach in order to grow and learn as much as possible. Glow fosters and encourages employee development and accommodates any interests or recommendations when possible. So make sure you voice your desire in exploring certain business areas of interest. Glow provides an optimal environment for interns to grow and develop personally and professionally, what are you waiting for? Go for this unique opportunity!

Meet: Gemma

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am currently completing my final semester of my Bachelors of Psychology. I was looking to get into the workplace somehow with no real idea of what career path I wanted to take, and found the ad for Glow. I was interested straight away and couldn’t believe my luck when I got the call. Starting at Glow, I instantly felt welcomed. The team was small which meant I wasn’t cast into the background and everyone was ignited with a passion to work, learn and teach. I was lucky enough that the people in my group interview were also hired so some familiar faces really put me at ease.

What is it like to work at Glow?

My time at Glow introduced me to whole new concepts and coming from a psychology background, I didn’t think I would be able to keep up. But the training and mentoring I received gave me the efficacy to work on projects and feel confident in my work. Doing this internship and studying full time was difficult at times, I really had to practice my time management and prioritising skills.

What piece of advice do you have for the next group of interns?

A piece of advice for future interns is to be inquisitive. This is a time to be a sponge, ask questions, don’t be shy to put your hand up. The intern period is short so try to extract as much from it as you can. The CEO of Glow gave me some advice in the first week which was: you have two ears and one mouth, use them in those proportions and you will go far.
