Unlocking consumer insights across markets for the food industry

Learn how Glow helped the leading industry trade body, Food Industry Asia, support its members with multi-market consumer insights.

The challenge

In 2010, seven of the world’s largest food and beverage companies founded Food Industry Asia. It has since grown to include nearly 50 companies across the supply chain, including ingredients, packaging, and QSR businesses.

FIA’s mission is to represent the food and beverage industry in Asia, promoting sustainable growth and serving as a regional knowledge hub for science-based research and advocacy. FIA’s work focuses on smart regulation, safe food, health, nutrition and innovation, and sustainable and resilient supply chains. Understanding consumer attitudes and behavior is critical to FIA’s role. This helps members stay ahead of emerging trends and allows FIA to make evidence-based contributions to support governments in the region.

The solution

Glow partners with FIA to provide consumer attitude and behavior data across Asia (and beyond). For every research project, FIA requires high-quality data available in an easy-to-use format, which requires Glow’s tech and team to deliver against a critical set of criteria, including:

Nationally representative samples high-quality respondent sets nationally representative by age, gender, and location in every market.

Local language – all surveys are taken in the local market language, requiring questions and responses to be translated and quality assured before the study is launched.

Easy to interrogate data outputs – FIA can access and analyze data in real-time using Glow’s intuitive interface but also receive structured topline reporting as PDF outputs that dig deeper into the data to identify actionable insights.

Service support – because FIA’s studies run across multiple markets and languages and vary in complexity, the Glow team is called upon to help across different studies, including questionnaire design, survey upload, translation management, sample quality assurance, data analysis, and report writing.

The outcome

FIA has worked with Glow over the last two years to conduct many studies to support the needs of their members and policy advocacy. These studies have included a range of topical food health issues and emerging trends, including:

  • Sustainability and diet An investigation into, among other things, individual consumption activities and diet within six major cities across South East Asia. The study found significant differences in behavior and attitudes; for example, what constitutes ‘vegetarianism’ differed across markets. The study helped to identify and understand barriers to adopting more sustainable consumption behaviors.
  • R-PET usage in food containers – A major study of rPET, recycled plastic sourced from post-consumer waste. The study was conducted across eight markets to determine people’s awareness and usage of rPET in food packaging. The study also aimed to identify people’s concerns, as many governments are considering legislation regarding its use in their respective countries.
  • UPFs – a global study across 16 markets was conducted to understand consumer perceptions of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). The study aimed to determine the impact of UPFs on what is considered a balanced diet. The results provided insight into the current understanding in this area and the potential future consumption of UPFs.
